CD Projekt Red has officially announced a brand-new expansion for The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, surprising fans more than a decade after the award-winning role-playing game first launched. The expansion, titled Songs of the Past, is scheduled to release in 2027 for PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S, marking Geralt of Rivia’s long-awaited return to the spotlight.
The announcement immediately sent shockwaves across the gaming industry and reignited excitement within the massive Witcher fan community. Originally released in 2015, The Witcher 3 is widely considered one of the greatest RPGs ever made, earning hundreds of Game of the Year awards and selling more than 60 million copies worldwide. While many players believed Geralt’s story had ended with the acclaimed Blood and Wine expansion in 2016, CD Projekt Red has now confirmed there is still another adventure waiting in the Continent.
According to the studio, Songs of the Past is being co-developed with Fool’s Theory, a Polish developer made up of several veterans who previously worked on The Witcher 3. The partnership has already generated confidence among fans, especially because Fool’s Theory is also involved with the upcoming remake of the original Witcher game.
Although CD Projekt Red has not revealed specific gameplay details or story information yet, the company confirmed that players will once again step into the role of Geralt of Rivia. Early speculation suggests the expansion may explore untold stories from Geralt’s past, potentially revisiting familiar locations and characters while introducing new threats and monsters for players to hunt.
The timing of the announcement is especially notable because it arrives while CD Projekt Red is already developing The Witcher 4, a sequel expected to shift focus toward Ciri as the main protagonist. Many fans now see Songs of the Past as a bridge between the original trilogy and the future of the franchise. Some analysts, however, believe the expansion’s development could push back the release timeline for The Witcher 4, which has become one of the most anticipated games currently in production.
Industry reaction to the announcement has been overwhelmingly positive. Social media quickly filled with excitement as longtime fans celebrated the unexpected return of one of gaming’s most iconic characters. For many players, Geralt’s adventures represented the golden age of narrative-driven RPGs, and the possibility of one final journey has sparked nostalgia across the community.
The expansion also highlights the continued longevity of The Witcher 3. Few single-player games maintain such a large and passionate audience more than ten years after release. Since launch, the game has continued to receive updates, including a major next-generation upgrade in 2022 that improved visuals and performance for modern hardware.
CD Projekt Red stated that more information about Songs of the Past will be revealed later in summer 2026. Until then, fans are left speculating about the expansion’s setting, storyline, and how Geralt’s return could connect to the future of the Witcher universe.
For now, one thing is clear: after more than a decade, The Witcher 3 is far from finished.
